ICU FORUM: Understanding How Norepinephrine Works

During the face-to-face Delex ICU Forum on March 16, 2024, organized in partnership with the Critical Care Division of the Philippine Heart Center, Dr. Anthony Uy, a specializing in Cardiology-Critical Care, delivered a lecture on Fluid Management in the intensive care unit (ICU), offering invaluable insights to attendees.

One of the key points emphasized by Dr. Uy is the use of Norepinephrine in the ICU. This drug functions by inducing vasoconstriction, thereby increasing both mean arterial pressure (MAP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), as well as increasing afterload. Dr. Uy further emphasized the inotropic effect of Norepinephrine, which supports cardiac contractility. The last effect he mentioned is the "fluid effect."
