WATCH: Navigating Hypertension & Hypotension in the ICU Setting
SPEAKERS: Marion Patricio, MD | Emily Aventura, MD
MODERATOR: Onion Ubaldo, MD
Managing blood pressure in critically ill patients is one of the most complex challenges faced by healthcare professionals in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Both hypertension and hypotension can significantly impact patient outcomes, making precise monitoring and timely interventions essential.
Hypertension in the ICU often arises due to pain, anxiety, or underlying conditions such as cardiovascular disease. When unmanaged, it can increase the risk of complications like stroke, myocardial injury, or organ dysfunction. On the other hand, hypotension—commonly resulting from sepsis, bleeding, or medication effects—can compromise tissue perfusion and lead to multi-organ failure if not promptly addressed.
